Preservation: a chemical substance used to preserve food
In Biblical times salt was used as a preservative, that was it's main use. I knew this through my degree, through the background knowledge that we learnt.
However I only just understood what that means in context of this:
Matthew 5:13: "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt looses it's saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot"here
Jesus is telling us that we are the preservative! That we are called to be the preservative of the earth.
We are called to go and help preserve the lives of everyone and everything around us. That we are called to preserve the creation that God gave us, to preserve the earth.
It made me think differently about this verse. I had always thought that the salt reference was about adding flavour to the earth. But in the actual context of the time it meant preservation.
I think it just made me realise that the whole Salt and Light thing is really big. Jesus calling us to preserve the earth. It is really Big and really exciting! because He walks besides us as He calls us to do it.
So that is my thoughts for this lovely Sunday evening.
